Everett retires from MHP Board of Trustees after 23 years

Everett retires from MHP Board of Trustees after 23 years

The Mahaska Health Partnership Board of Trustees gathered last week to celebrate the retirement of longtime Board Member Lawrence Everett of New Sharon. Everett was sworn in to the Board of Trustees on January 12, 1987, and served for 23 years.

The MHP Board of Trustees is a seven-member group comprised of elected representatives from throughout Mahaska County. Members are elected every four years, with many trustees serving multiple terms. The Board is the governing body of MHP, serving as the sounding board and decision makers for new services and projects as well as staffing and community needs. The current members of the MHP Board include Mary Sexton, Jim Hansen, Becky Siefering, Paul Swenson, Jon Sullivan and Mike Grim of Oskaloosa as well as interim member Amy McGriff of New Sharon.

Before joining the Board, Everett’s life took him many places and he said that helped form his leadership style. A lifetime resident of Mahaska County, he graduated from the Lacey School in 1938. He went on to serve in the US 8th Air Force during the Second World War. He was commissioned in 1944 and flew 29 missions over Europe in a B-24 bomber.  He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Flying Citation and the Lead Crew Commendation.

Everett returned home to attend Iowa State University, where he met his wife, Beverly. They wed in 1947 and settled on a farm outside of New Sharon to raise their family of five children: Leslie, George, Becky, Gordon and Floyd.

According to MHP Board of Trustees President Mike Grim, Mahaska Health Partnership experienced immense growth during the two decades of Everett’s service. Many new service lines were added as well as additional facilities instrumental to the growth of healthcare services for our community. During his service, MHP has added the mental and behavioral health services of New Directions and the geriatric psychiatric services of Vision Quest; seen the affiliation with MHP of General Surgeons Paul Riggs and Timothy Breon and added facilities including the New Sharon Medical Center and Medical Specialty Center.

“Lawrence was also instrumental in the capital campaign and construction of the MHP Hospice Serenity House,” Grim said. “He has also been active in the planning of the upcoming Inpatient, Birthing Center and Surgical Services addition.

“We would like to extend our deep gratitude to Everett for his outstanding service and commitment to MHP and the Board of Trustees. His extraordinary dedication and the dividends it paid for the residents of Mahaska County will not soon be forgotten.”
