MHP Nurses Named to Top 100

Two MHP Nurses Named to Top 100 Great Iowa Nurses

Mahaska Health Partnership nurses Melinda Groenendyk, RN, of Cedar and Jodi Chipman, RN, IBCLC of Oskaloosa have been named to the seventh annual listing of “100 Great Iowa Nurses.”

Recipients will be honored at a special celebration recognizing National Nurses Week on May 1 in Des Moines. The Iowa Nurses Association, Iowa Nurses Foundation and Iowa Hospital Association partner each year to create this list, which celebrates nursing by honoring 100 nurses from around the state.

MHP Chief Nursing Officer Darlene Keuning RN, BSN, MS, said this recognition is meaningful because it is independent, outside recognition of the excellence found in MHP’s nursing staff. “It is a great affirmation of the skill, quality and compassion of our nursing staff,” Keuning said.

Groenendyk works both as a Nursing Supervisor and staff nurse directly caring for patients. She has worked at MHP since 2001, and was cited by staff for her mentoring and ability to positively impact their work and the patient’s well-being. Even though she has had the opportunity to fill a fulltime nursing supervisor position, Groenendyk chooses to continue bedside nursing on a part-time basis, because she believes that is where she makes the most meaningful contribution to her profession.

According to Director of Nursing Support Joy Patch, RN, Groenendyk is a leader, a teacher and a mentor. “She not only works closely with our nursing students, but also plays a large role in orienting new nurses to MHP,” Patch said. “Melinda is very involved in a variety of committees to strengthen our staff. She was a key player in building our online electronic medical record documentation for the nursing staff and then was involved in the education and training of staff for its implementation.”

Chipman has worked in the Birthing Center since 1996. She has been a board-certified lactation consultant for four years, working closely with patients and the Mahaska and Wapello County Public Health Departments. According to Birthing Center Director Chyann McGlothlen, RNC-OB, BSN, said Chipman is always on the side of the patient and speaks with gentleness and care, developing personal relationships with her “moms.”

“For mothers with questions on breastfeeding, Jodi is such a strong advocate and has helped moms overcome many obstacles,” McGlothlen said. “She thrives in her role as educator, and continually goes above and beyond for her patients. She was instrumental in the development of the ‘Perfect Beginnings’ program and remains a vital part of its current success.”

Keuning said that both nurses are true leaders who represent the best that the nursing profession has to offer. “The compassion, high quality care and leadership our nurses provide every day is truly exceptional. We are so proud and thankful that we work with many great nurses at MHP and because of their care, our patients benefit.”
