Welcome Mark Beers, DPM

MHP Welcomes Podiatrist Mark Beers, DPM

Long-time Oskaloosa Podiatrist (foot doctor) Mark Beers, DPM, has joined the physicians of Mahaska Health Partnership Specialty Services and will be relocating his practice to MHP’s campus beginning July 11, 2011.

Dr. Beer’s new office will be located on the first floor of the Medical Specialty Center (entrance #3).  He will be joining the practice with General Surgeons Timothy Breon, MD, and Paul Riggs, MD; Allergy/Pulmonology Specialist Ron Graeff, MD; Orthopaedic Surgeon Sreedhar Somisetty, MD and Orthopaedic Physician Assistant Mike Johnson, PA-C; Family Practitioner Nick Messamer, MD; Family Nurse Practitioners Melissa Lamb, ARNP, and Tina Main, ARNP; Adult Nurse Practitioner Lisa Nelson, ARNP; and Pediatrician John O’Brien, MD.

A podiatrist, also called a doctor of podiatric medicine, is a specialist who provides medical diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems, such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), spurs, neuromas, ingrown toenails, warts, corns and calluses. Dr. Beers also performs surgeries to correct or remedy such problems as bunions, fractures, hammertoes, infections, ruptured Achilles, and other ligaments and tendons.

According to MHP CEO Jay Christensen, Dr. Beers has had a successful, independent practice in Oskaloosa for more than 20 years. “Dr. Beers is a well-respected podiatrist who is on MHP’s Medical Staff and performs surgeries here,” Christensen said. “We are excited to continue this collaboration, and continue providing comprehensive podiatry services for people throughout the region.”

Dr. Beers said he is eager for the move and is looking forward to serving patients at his new practice. “The business of healthcare is changing, with a strong focus on electronic medical records and other information technology (IT) requirements. MHP’s expertise in this area was a huge attraction. Their IT department is far ahead of the curve and has been cited in national publications.

“By joining with MHP, I will be able to continue my focus on providing comprehensive podiatry care to my patients. With the close proximity to many referral sources, I am also looking forward to developing new programs and services to benefit my patients,” Dr. Beers stressed.

Dr. Beers said he is also looking forward to a close collaboration with Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator Sharon Ferguson, RN, CDE, who will be located in his office. “This is a great fit,” he said. “I have a number of patients with diabetes who, because of their disease, have medical problems with their feet. Sharon is highly qualified to provide comprehensive education on the care, nutrition and lifestyle changes necessary to live a full and productive life.”

A member of the American Podiatric Medical Society and the Iowa Podiatric Medical Association, Dr. Beers received a bachelor’s of science degree in biology from Indiana University in Bloomington before attending Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago in 1989. He performed his podiatric residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and practiced at the Marshalltown Foot Clinic in Marshalltown, Ia., before moving to Oskaloosa in 1991.

Dr. Beers and his wife, Melinda, have three daughters. Sydney, 18, is attending Iowa State University. Brooke, 16, goes to Oskaloosa High School and will be an exchange student in Belgium for 10 months starting this fall. Kamryn, 12, attends Oskaloosa Middle School.

“Oskaloosa has been a wonderful place for us to raise our family,” Dr. Beers said. “There is a great school system and my family and I enjoy the outdoor activities available, such as hunting and fishing. This is our home, and I’m looking forward to my new partnership with MHP. I know this move will only enhance services for my patients.”
