Volunteers Receive Award

Volunteers Receive Governor's Awards

Oskaloosa residents LeRoy Hurst, Martha Veerman, Rosetta Fry and Martha Veldhuizen received the 2011 Iowa Governor’s Award for their contributions to Mahaska Health Partnership.

According to MHP Volunteer Coordinator Kim Langfitt, criteria for selection included exceptional commitment to volunteerism, demonstrated exemplary leadership, creativity, cooperation and work in their service to others. The program provides all Iowa nonprofit, charitable and government organizations a way to honor their cherished volunteers with a prestigious state –level recognition award

“We have such wonderful volunteers at Mahaska Health Partnership,” Langfitt said. “They are truly members of the healthcare team and their contributions are so valuable to our organization. In 2010, volunteer hours totaled 21,801.

“We have an outstanding group of men and women volunteers of all ages. Each volunteer adds their own special talents and love to the healthcare needs of the patients and families at Mahaska Health Partnership.”

Hurst has been a volunteer at MHP since 2009. “From his very first day, LeRoy has been an indispensable member of our organization,” Langfitt said. “His ‘home base’ department is in maintenance, and he does a variety of odd jobs four mornings each week. He is well known for his dependability, taking on any task with gusto. Our gardens and grounds have never looked better, thanks in large part to LeRoy’s efforts.”

Veerman began volunteering at MHP in 2007, working in patient registration once a week, as well as our monthly Cataract Clinic. “And if that is not enough to keep her busy, Martha volunteers in the MHP Auxiliary Gift Shop when needed and at the MHP Hospice Serenity House,” Langfitt said. “Martha has a wonderful personality and does not know a stranger. Our patients and visitors have nothing but wonderful things to say about her.”

Fry began volunteering at MHP’s Patient Registration in 2002. “Rosetta and her late husband, Kenneth, started volunteering every weekend, helping us keep the lobby open,” Langfitt said. “Rosetta still volunteers every weekend, and also volunteers at the Senior Center in Oskaloosa.”

Veldhuizen has volunteered countless hours in a variety of locations at MHP since she first started in 2004. Langfitt said she is as a reliable and devoted volunteer who currently serves as liaison between families and the staff of Surgical Services. “Martha also lends a hand monthly at the Ecumenical Cupboard, our local food bank.”

The Iowa Governors' Volunteer Awards program was created in 1982, with inaugural awards presented in 1983. The program has grown from a small program only available to state agencies to its present function of providing all Iowa nonprofit, charitable and government organizations with a way to honor their cherished volunteers with a prestigious state-level award.
