Oh my Heart!

With a new little one, the tests, forms and information are abundant. Family Practice with Obstetrics Physician Dr. Shawn Richmond knows this all too well! One test that all of his little patients receive is a pulse oximetry to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. Sounds big but it’s actually quite small. The test uses little sticky monitors (think of a band-aid), that are applied to a baby’s foot and hand. Don’t worry, this test is totally painless, but provides insight on their health, often before any signs and symptoms could be noticed. Pretty neat huh?

Christian Counseling

Christian Counseling Available at MHP

Mahaska Health Partnership Behavioral Health Services has counselors available to provide traditional as well as Christian counseling for people facing adversity in their life.

“Counseling is a wonderful resource to help patients determine their goals, face problems and learn ways to cope with life circumstances,” explained MHP Licensed Mental Health Counselor Katie Wise. “All types of counseling and counselors are available to meet the unique needs of every patient. One specialty offered at MHP is Christian Counseling.”

Wise explained that Christian counseling differs from traditional counseling because it employs teachings of the Bible and uses God’s word as a guide for determining and governing behavior. “Christian counseling is a choice patients can make. Not every patient wishes to base their recovery on faith and that is OK. However, it is an option for those who wish to use God’s teachings as a method to aid in their recovery.”

Christian- based counseling is available for individuals as well as couples and families seeking assistance. Wise said many find comfort in the belief and trust in a higher power. “A life based in Christianity can bring families together, which is why it has proven to be a useful guide during difficult times. The Bible has divine wisdom about human nature, marriage and family needs.”

Wise said Christian counseling is still very similar to traditional counseling, just with an added faith-based element. “Through any counseling, patients will develop an interpersonal relationship with their counselor and with themselves. The hope is to help patients get to know themselves better so they can realize the root cause of problems and learn how to better navigate their issues”.

“Counselors work to assist individuals in overcoming trials and tribulations in life,” Wise explained. “A Christian Counselor does this through the word and teachings of the Bible.”

Wise stressed the benefit of requesting Christian Counseling at the beginning of treatment, although it can be requested at any time. “We have many experienced counselors who offer Behavioral, Client-Centered, Marriage and Family counseling as well as Play Therapy. By requesting Christian Counseling early, it will ensure you are matched with a provider in that specialty.”

Wise shared that the underlying goal of Christian Counseling is to increase the congruence between a person’s thoughts and behaviors with Biblical principles. “Every counseling experience is tailored to a person’s individual needs so I encourage anyone experiencing distress to contact us for support and guidance and begin healing today.”
