Family Preparedness Month Event

Mahaska Health Partnership Celebrates Family Preparedness Month with Hands-on Learning

Mahaska Health Partnership will be hosting the Blank Children’s Hospital Fire Safety House and the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in recognition of Family Preparedness Month.

Family Preparedness Month is a time recognized to encourage families to assemble an emergency kit, create or update disaster plans, stay informed and get involved in community preparedness. In this spirit, fire safety education and overall good health activities are being offered on the MHP campus in Oskaloosa.

“We feel a responsibility to offer opportunities like this to the communities we serve,” shared Renee Edgar, MHP Wellness team member and co-coordinator of the event. “There will be something for all ages to help foster overall health and wellbeing.”

The Fire Safety House is a free educational program designed to teach children the important aspects of fire safety. The house will be open from 8 am to 4 pm and offers hands-on learning to prepare children for the unexpected and frightening experience of a fire.

“Fire safety education can make a big difference if a family is faced with a fire emergency,” stated Edgar. “It’s important to map out an emergency plan and to practice it once you have established it.”

The fire house resembles a motor home and is wheelchair accessible. There are three individual rooms including a kitchen, living room and bedroom. This allows three groups of eight to rotate through the house at a time. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete the tour. Members of the Oskaloosa Fire Department will be on hand to help answer questions and facilitate the tours.

Additionally, the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center (MLC) will be on the MHP campus and open to the public from 1 to 4 pm on Sept. 12 to educate on bones and provide hands-on experience with surgical instruments and equipment used in joint replacement procedures.

“We have a unique opportunity to educate on life-saving tools that can be used in case of fire and while you’re here, why not also learn more about your bones and possibly inspire some budding interest in the medical field,” Edgar said.

“The focus of the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center is to provide medical education,” Edgar explained. “When else would you have a chance to experiment with state-of-the-art medical equipment used in orthopaedics and the bone models are a great tool for starting a dialogue with kids about the strength of their bones and the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise.”

All ages are welcome to experience the Zimmer Mobile Learning Center, but the fire house is limited to ages four and up. All events are free and do not require pre-registration. For more information, visit www.mahaskahealth.org or contact Edgar at 641-672-3174.
