New Life at MHP's Birthing Center

When Jennifer and Mike Comfort discovered they were having their first child, they knew it would be an exciting adjustment. What they didn’t know was how pleasant their experience at Mahaska Health Partnership would be for their new family.

“We’re from Oskaloosa, so we never really considered going anywhere else but Mahaska Health Partnership,” said Jennifer. “Dr. Richmond did a great job of managing our pregnancy and delivery.”

When the Comforts arrived at MHP early on the morning of February 27, their plan was to have Dr. Richmond deliver their son naturally. “After laboring for a while without any progress, we knew it was time to make a decision and get the ball rolling. Dr. Richmond handled the situation with ease and expertise.”

Jennifer explained that Dr. Richmond and Birthing Center Director Chyann Vroegh were quick to answer any questions she had and did an excellent job of putting their new plan of action in perspective. “They were so calm under pressure. It was easy for me to trust their judgment,” Jennifer said.

At 9:40 am on Wednesday, February 27, Ryan Michael Comfort was delivered via cesarean section by MHP General Surgeon Paul Riggs. He weighed a perfect 8 pounds 6 ounces and was 21 inches long. “Dr. Richmond, Dr. Riggs and Chyann were all able to work together on my new birth plan,” Jennifer added. “Everyone was on the same page and focused on the same thing: doing what was best for me and my baby.”

Jennifer couldn’t say enough about the care she received in the days that followed. “I could really tell that the Birthing Center staff truly cared about us. They listened to your answers carefully when they asked questions and took my concerns seriously,” Jennifer shared. “They wouldn’t leave our room unless they knew our concerns were resolved. This made us feel so well cared for.

“The staff at the Birthing Center provided all the information they could in a caring and professional way,” Jennifer finished. “They made sure the care they gave us was personal and you could tell they were all there just for us.”
