Oh my Heart!

With a new little one, the tests, forms and information are abundant. Family Practice with Obstetrics Physician Dr. Shawn Richmond knows this all too well! One test that all of his little patients receive is a pulse oximetry to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. Sounds big but it’s actually quite small. The test uses little sticky monitors (think of a band-aid), that are applied to a baby’s foot and hand. Don’t worry, this test is totally painless, but provides insight on their health, often before any signs and symptoms could be noticed. Pretty neat huh?

Preparing for New Birthing Center

MHP Preparing for Special Deliveries in New Birthing Center

The Stork Report began in January and keeps moms-to be, and anyone else, informed of the progress on MHP’s new Birthing Center as it relates to pregnancy.

Stork Report participants receive expert information every four weeks via email from MHP obstetrics providers including OB/GYN Jeffrey Fowler, DO; and Family Practice Physicians Leigh Gilburn, DO; Ed Hirl, MD; Stephen Mineart, MD; and Shawn Richmond, MD.

“The new Birthing Center will have five labor-delivery suites complete with guest accommodations,” said MHP Birthing Center Director Chyann Vroegh. “Features include whirlpool tubs and personal refrigerators in addition to the amenities our patients currently enjoy, such as room service dining and free wifi.”

In anticipation of the first babies born in MHP’s new Birthing Center, area businesses have been very generous. “We’re creating five gift bundles with donations from local businesses,” Vroegh explained. “The first babies born in each suite will receive gifts in celebration of our opening.”

The following businesses have made contributions to the Stork Report gift bundles: America’s Best Value Inn; The Antique Peddler; B&B Bedding, Inc.; Bank Iowa; Debbie’s Merle Norman; Edward Jones-David Ahmad; Fareway; First National Bank Midwest; Gardner Collier Jewelry; Lifetime Dental Solutions; Mahaska Drug; MidWestOne Bank; Oskaloosa Herald; Ottumwa Radio, LLC; Robert Auld Investments; Scentsy-Chris Dickerson; Signature Homestyles-Alicia Orman; Smokey Row Coffee Co.; Tassel Ridge Winery; and Town Crier. To view a photo gallery of the donations, visit www.mahaskahealth.org and click the Stork Report box on the right hand side.

Vroegh said it’s not too late to sign up for the Stork Report. “Even if you sign up now you’ll still receive a commemorative gift and be invited to a special reception for Stork Report participants when the new Birthing Center opens,” Vroegh said. “I encourage anyone who is expecting or who may become pregnant to sign up. It’s great information and the special reception will be a great opportunity to visit all of the physicians who provide obstetrics services at MHP.”
