However, when Rachel Sheetz, PA-C chose where to have her baby, she knew Mahaska Health was her top choice because she too is part of the expert care teams of Mahaska Health. Being a Physician’s Assistant in the General Surgery department, she knew first hand how every member of the team at Mahaska Health put patients first.
Throughout the weekend of labor in the hospital and even after Rachel and baby Liam returned home, Dr. Richmond and Dr. Thompson were there to help for every step. “They were very reassuring even as I was a first time mom. They were super helpful from day one.”
Because Rachel was experiencing pregnancy and motherhood for the first time, Dr. Richmond was always sure to explain what each step of the journey would entail. It is always important to the OB team at Mahaska Health that a plan is in place which the patient feels comfortable with and knowledgeable about. Even in the new experience of giving birth for the first time, Rachel knew that every nurse and doctor around her were giving her expert care with compassion and knowledge.
Dr. Richmond was one of those team members that impressed Rachel with his commitment to care. “I knew instantly that we would be in great hands.”
Rachel shared that for her it was important to choose a physician and hospital that could offer care for her entire family. Dr. Richmond is not only her Primary Care Doctor, he will be baby Liam’s as well. Rachel’s experience of giving birth for the first time at Mahaska Health gave her a glimpse into what life is like as a patient and how the dedication and care of staff can make an incredible impact. “Both the day-time and night-time nurses were exceptional. They took care of Liam as well as myself.”
For the Mahaska Health OB department, it is truly a team effort to care for the community. Doctors, nurses, front desk staff, cleaning staff, food services, volunteers and more play a role in the quality care that a mother and family receive. Every meaningful touch such as the bassinets donated by the hospital auxiliary this year make patients like Rachel and Liam feel welcomed and loved.
