Preparing for surgery

Once your procedure is scheduled, your care team will walk you through what to bring, when to arrive, and how to
prepare before surgery day.

The week before surgery, a Mahaska Health care team member may call to review your health history, allergies, medications, and instructions. Blood tests, X-rays, an EKG, or a pregnancy test may be performed if ordered by your provider.
The right questions can also help you feel more prepared for your consultation.
Questions to ask before surgery:

  • What are my treatment options?
  • Why is surgery recommended?
  • What happens if I wait?
  • How should I prepare?
  • What type of anesthesia will I need?
  • How long does recovery usually take?
  • What should I avoid after surgery?
  • When should I call with concerns?
  • Will I need follow-up care or therapy?

Shower or bathe with soap, taking care to clean the procedure area.
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight unless directed otherwise.
Avoid food, gum, coffee, water, mints, smoking, chewing tobacco, and secondhand smoke.
Take medications only as directed, with a small sip of water.
Follow any instructions from your provider.

Arrange transportation to and from the hospital with a family member or other adult.
Do not wear makeup or nail polish.
Bring a contact lens case, if needed.
Leave jewelry and valuables at home.
Bring your insurance card and photo ID.
Check in at the registration desk at Entrance #4.
Tell your doctor or nurse about fever, chills, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, urinary problems, or other changes.
Bring your questions with you.

On the day of your procedure, your team will guide you through check-in, preparation, anesthesia, and recovery. After surgery, you’ll receive clear instructions for medications, activity, follow-up care, and when to call with concerns.
