Local mom highlights moments of joy at Mahaska Health, from Maternity Care to Family Medicine.
Abby Huber and her husband Cody Huber of What Cheer, Iowa have welcomed two beautiful babies into their lives at the ‘Iowa Center of Excellence,’ Mahaska Health Birthing Center.
Having been recommended by a friend to receive maternity care at Mahaska Health, she was first introduced to the health system in 2021, when they welcomed Harper Huber into the world. Since then, Abby and her whole family have transitioned their care to Mahaska Health: mom, dad, children, and babies on the way have all been treated by the compassionate physicians at Mahaska Health.
Abby’s first experience in maternity care stood out to her because of the incredibly personable, sincere, and attentive care they received from Shawn Richmond, MD, Family Practice & OB Physician and Mahaska Health Family Medicine Medical Director. She recounts her initial meeting with Dr. Richmond as her being put to ease by his professionalism, friendliness, and caring demeanor.
“Throughout the entire process, Dr. Richmond showed that he cared in the small ways: by listening intently and looking at me in the eye. He also showed he cared in big ways: by following up with us regularly, working with our scheduling needs, and being really communicative and present through our journey.”
Abby maintains many reasons she’s happy with her choice to receive maternity care for her recently delivered baby Archie at Mahaska Health. Most notably, the supportive, fun, and respectful nurses in the Birthing Center made her visits a lot more enjoyable than one would think while having a baby!
“I was so surprised that I even got a fancy meal to celebrate! It felt homey. The Birth Center didn’t feel like a hospital. It was really roomy, they offered me soft robes, and made sure I was comfortable. It was so helpful to not feel like I was pushed into a tin can. I got to labor, deliver, and recover in the same room – with such amazing nurses and staff.”
All in all, Abby couldn’t share enough of her gratitude to the doctors and nurses for being such an important part of her family’s lives. “When we bring our kids in, they also ask us how we are, and if we need anything. We feel truly cared for.”
