February is Cardiac Health Month—a great time to focus on ways you can keep your heart healthy. Heart health is all about empowering yourself with small, positive changes that can lead to a healthier life. Heart disease is a primary health risk in the U.S., (source) but the good news is that it’s largely preventable with early detection and healthy habits. To start your journey toward better heart health, here are three things you can do starting today:
1. Move More
Regular physical activity is one of the best things you can do for your heart. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, like walking, cycling, or doing active tasks like gardening, most days of the week. Movement helps improve circulation, lowers blood pressure, and boosts your mood.
2. Eat for Your Heart
A heart-healthy diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Try cutting back on processed foods high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats. Simple swaps like snacking on nuts instead of chips or adding more leafy greens to your meals can make a big difference over time.
3. Schedule a Cholesterol Screening
Knowing your cholesterol levels is key to preventing heart disease. Elevated cholesterol can lead to blockages in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke. Mahaska Health is hosting a Community Cholesterol Screening on February 15th, making it easier than ever to stay informed and take control of your heart health.
Community Cholesterol Screening Event
Mahaska Health will be hosting a Heart Health Cholesterol Screening Event on Saturday, February 15th. The event will include FREE cholesterol checks, sleep quality assessments, blood pressure advice from our health experts and Providers, and healthy cooking tips. We will also be offering complementary vascular screening exams and $50 vouchers towards Calcium Scoring Testing at Mahaska Health.
This event shines a spotlight on knowing your numbers so that you can take the steps needed to stay healthy. Pre-registration is not required, although encouraged, by contacting our Cardiology Services Team at 641.672.3174 or registering online.
