David Cornelder, DO 1

David Cornelder, DO, joined Mahaska Health in March of 2020, and his calming presence serves as a great asset to the Emergency Services care team. Cornelder is an Oskaloosa native who began his career at Mahaska Health as a respiratory therapist. In 2005, he took a break from respiratory therapy and management of a sleep center to complete his doctorate at Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine. Cornelder completed his residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in 2012 and served as an ER physician there for 7 years.

Dr. Cornelder knows how important it is for providers to really listen to their patients. “In emergency medicine, you must learn to read between the lines. Oftentimes when we encounter patients, we don’t have the luxury of having all the details, so being observant is key to quality care,” he shared. He is passionate about the challenging aspects of emergency care. “We care for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments, I like the challenge. Anything can come through those doors, so you have to be ready for anything.”

The return back to Mahaska Health came with a number of familiar faces. “I chose Mahaska Health because of the people. I’ve known several of the providers and staff here for a long time.” In his free time, Dr. Cornelder enjoys traveling to Northeast Iowa to go camping and fishing.
