On August 2, 2025, the Mahaska Health Foundation and Hospice Serenity House welcomed hundreds of runners, walkers, and volunteers for the 14th Annual Run in the Sun.
This year’s honored family gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Walter Cubit, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend. Walter’s daughters, Carole Comstock and Lorri Grubb, shared how the Serenity House provided comfort, compassion, and meaningful moments during Walter’s time there.
Gifts from the Care Team
For Carole, one of the greatest blessings was the freedom to be present. “We could be there as much as we needed, day or night, and that meant everything to us,” she said. The Serenity House became a home away from home, allowing the family to focus fully on their time with Walter.
She expressed heartfelt gratitude for the care team’s dedication and attention to detail. Every small kindness such as fluffing a pillow, adjusting the lights, or offering a favorite snack brought comfort. One particular gift stood out: Walter’s room was large enough to hold his entire family. “It was a space where we could simply be together,” Carole shared.

Supporting the Mission
At Hospice Serenity House, the mission is to provide comfort and peace of mind for patients and their families.
“The caregivers at the Serenity House showed true dedication in the way they provided for Walter,” Carole said. “We are so thankful for the Serenity House and for the generous community that makes its care possible. It is a gift we will carry with us always.”
The Run in the Sun is one of the key fundraising events that helps sustain this mission. More than 600 community members participated this year, with every contribution—whether through running, donating, or volunteering— supporting the Serenity House and its care for patients and families.
The Cubit family’s story is a reminder that behind every donation and every act of support, there is a loved one, a family, and a legacy worth honoring. The Mahaska Health Foundation is dedicated to carrying that legacy forward by enhancing quality of life and increasing healthcare accessibility for our friends, neighbors, and the communities we serve.
