David Cornelder, DO Emergency Room Director

APRIL 13, 2020

MAHASKA COUNTY –Mahaska Health is pleased to welcome Dr. David Cornelder as the new Emergency Room Medical Director.

Dr. Cornelder has been serving in his position now for just over one month, and his presence is greatly appreciated by all those he’s worked with. “He has a calming presence that has been a blessing as Mahaska Health works to tackle the obstacles presented to our hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic,” shared Mahaska Health CEO, Kevin DeRonde.

Dr. Cornelder began his healthcare career as a respiratory therapist serving at Mahaska Health and University of Iowa. In 2005, he took a break from respiratory therapy and management of a sleep center to complete his doctorate.

Dr. Cornelder completed his Medical Degree at Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009. He completed his residency at Broadlawns Medical Center in 2012 and has served as an ER physician for the last 7 years.

When asked about his approach and philosophy to care and treatment, Dr. Cornelder noted how important it is for providers to really listen to their patients. “In emergency medicine, you must learn to read between the lines. Oftentimes we when encounter patients, we don’t have the luxury of having all the details, so being observant is key to quality care,” he shared.

Dr. Cornelder is passionate about the challenging aspects of emergency care. “We care for patients during some of their most vulnerable moments, I like the challenge. Anything can come through those doors, so you have to be ready for anything.”

Oskaloosa is Dr. Cornelder’s hometown, and the return back to Mahaska Health came with a number of familiar faces. “I chose Mahaska Health because of the people. I’ve known several of the providers and staff here for a long time.”

In his free time, Dr. Cornelder enjoys traveling to Northeast Iowa to camp and fish.
